The US technology giant Apple Inc. has been a key employer in the Cork region for over a quarter of a centrury with the global technological giant opening its first manufactoring plant at Hollyhill in the suburbs of Cork City back in 1980.
A little known innovator at the time, Steve Jobs, the then vice-chairman of Apple was on hand to open the new plant in 1980 which has grown to be the company's European headquarters with a highly skilled and specialist workforce.
Many of the traditional Cork industries, such as Dunlop and Ford, have gone, but Apple has grown to become the city's biggest private employer with 4,000 workers, the vast majority at its vast Hollyhill plant, a mini-tech city on the fringe of the city.
In 2010, Apple Computers overtook Microsoft as the world’s largest technology company by market share with the Hollyhill facility employing 2,000 staff at the time. In November 2015. the company announced further expansions at Hollyhill and a new office at Lavitt’s Quay with the workforce at almost 5,000 with plans for 1,000 more staff over the coming years.
